Philippe Weisbecker writes about his work, “These “stones” were picked up on the beach in Cadaques, a village in Costa Brava, Spain during two spring visits: 1996 and 2004. Discarded by local builders and eroded by the sea, they are bits and pieces of our recent past. There were other stones and pebbles lying on that beach as well, but their geological heritage was too immense for me to comprehend. The “stones” I have collected are witnesses to a more human time scale. They represent a past I have lived through; they recall the souvenirs of my yesterdays. These archeological artifacts in-the-making, unremarkable in themselves, are open to emotional interpretation, beyond their historical origin.
Weisbecker was schooled in art and graduated from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Artes Decortifs in 1966. Since moving to New York in 1968 he has worked prolifically and shown extensively, including at international venues in Venice, Tokyo and Barcelona. He currently shares his time between New York and Paris. This is Weisbecker’s first one-person show at Ricco/Maresca.
