Project Description

Elizabeth Rogers is a classically trained sculptor and landscape painter. Her art is inspired by the direct study of nature and by the work of artists from a panoply of art historical periods and traditions. Within the medium of sculpture, she creates figurative work that is rich in plasticity. She sculpts portraits, figures, and animals and has been awarded numerous public commissions.

Rogers’s paintings convey a surprising breadth of space and atmosphere within the two-dimensional plane. The study of the expression of light in nature as it grazes land and water and is interrupted by clouds and weather has been her ongoing interest. Rogers seeks to capture a truthful impression. Making paintings in the studio, she draws from memory and imagination, often veering into abstraction. Some of her paintings have dark qualities– but this darkness is enlivened and embroidered with light.

Rogers received a BS in Fine Arts from Western Michigan University, studied figurative sculpture at the University of Michigan, and received a MFA from the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy of Art. She also studied with Koho Yamamoto at the Koho School of Sumi-E in New York City. She has taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and The University of Pennsylvania.
