Project Description

Self-Taught Inmate Gil Bate’s Talent Tell a Prisoner’s Narrative

Artist Gil Batle has been in an out of five California prisons over 20 years. Charged with fraud and forgery, Batle’s artistic skills were self-taught during his stay. His talent protected him form violence, whereas his drawing and tattooing skills were valued by the other inmates. Now, Batle lives in a small island in the Philippines, where he continues to hone his talent. The eggshells above represent the fragility of life as well as a narrative witnessed first hand through his conviction experience.
