Open a larger version of the following image in a popup: William Hawkins Big Cat, 1987 Enamel and mixed media on Masonite 49 x 56 1/2 in. (124.5 x 143.5 cm) (WH 497) SOLD This heroic feline is rendered in an appealing saffron orange. What piece of discarded printed matter inspired its creation? Is this a house cat or a jungle cat? Likely, it’s a hybrid of the two born from the artist’s active imagination. The animal’s mane is textural; it was not uncommon for Hawkins to add sand or other additives to give dimension to and, as he put it: “puff out” some of his subjects. For certain, regardless of the genus, Hawkins created a feline that cannot be ignored.
