Open a larger version of the following image in a popup: William Hawkins Red Dog Running #2, 1984 Enamel on found wood panel 43 1/2 × 46 in. (110.5 × 116.8 cm) (WH 498) SOLD “Red Dog Running” is one of Hawkins’s most iconic motifs. It came from a story published in Ladies’ Home Journal, which was accompanied by an illustration that Hawkins was clearly and deeply struck by—having a love of animals that went back to his youth. Here, the artist created a powerful dog, virtually on fire, running across the picture plane. Hawkins believed that he could improve any picture that he came across, and he was fearless in this pursuit. With his less than third-grade education, the artist was functionally illiterate, sometimes even misspelling his own name. Thus, he attached great value to the written word, particularly if it was printed—and regardless of his rudimentary understanding of its contents. He gathered that if something was in print, it must be important. The painted title in this work, painstakingly copied, is a testament to this.
