C.T McClusky was as a circus clown who spent the winter seasons between the late 1940s and mid-1950s at a boarding house in Oakland, California. Working with found materials, he completed 53 collages on cardboard incorporating foil, string, photographic illustrations and cutouts from animal cracker boxes. His vignettes from circus life are candid, nostalgic and strikingly surreal. Ricco/Maresca’s exhibition “Circus Surreal” (September 17 - October 24, 2020) was the artist’s first ever gallery exhibition.
