Henry Darger (1892-1973)
Henry Dargeris perhaps the best known Outsider/Self-Taught American artist. For most of his life, he was employed as a janitor in Catholic hospitals. Come night, he gave expression to a private, massively original imaginary world—working from his small rented room in Chicago’s North Side. Over a period of more than 50 years, Darger created a magnum opus consisting of a 15,000-page illustrated saga—reenacted in more than 300 watercolors and collages depicting the adventures of seven innocent heroines, the Vivian Girls, as they lead a rebellion against the evil, child-enslaving, adult Glandelinians.
