Bill Cunningham was a prominent fashion and street photographer, best known for his ability to capture shifting trends in the fashion industry.
Cunningham was born in 1929 in Massachusetts. He briefly attended Harvard University before moving to New York City to pursue work as a women’s hat designer. As Cunningham observed women’s hats going out of fashion, he pivoted his career towards fashion journalism, writing for Women’s Wear Daily and the Chicago Tribune. It was at this time that Cunningham began photographing people on the street in an attempt to capture evolutions in fashion. Cunningham is said to have reinvented the genre of fashion photography, embracing spontaneous images taken on city streets as opposed to using posed models in a studio setting.1of 2
