Francesca Woodman was a photographer, best known for her eerie and experimental, nude self-portraits.
Woodman was born in Denver, Colorado in 1958 to a pair of artist parents. Consequently, Woodman was surrounded by art and artists at a very early age, including names such as Richard Serra and David Hockney. When Woodman developed her own artistic practice, her oeuvre consisted mostly of nudes —of herself and other women— that played with the traditions of the genre. She often hid figures behind furniture and played with elements like light and movement to challenge the idea of fixed time and space in photography. Woodman suffered from depression after her move to New York and took her life in 1981 at the age of 22. Though her work was not extensively shown during her life, Woodman has had several posthumous exhibitions, including “Francesca Woodman. On Being an Angel” at the Moderna Museet and Life in Motion: Egon Schiele/Francesca Woodman at Tate Liverpool in the United Kingdom.2of 2
