Bill Brandt was a German born, English photographer best known for his photo-journalism in London during World War II and his female nudes.
Born in 1904 in Hamburg, Germany, and raised in London, Brandt grew up surrounded by the turmoil of World War I. After traveling to Vienna for a doctor’s appointment in 1927, Brandt decided to stay and find work in a photography studio. There he met and photographed Ezra Pound, who subsequently introduced Brandt to Man Ray. Brandt became an apprentice at Man Ray’s studio in Paris soon after and developed a deep knowledge of photography. After returning to London in 1931, Brandt began documenting British life, particularly pertaining to the post-war landscape. He became a frequent contributor to publications such as Picture Post and Verve. However, after the war, Brandt’s photography turned towards female nudes, with which he experimented with photography’s ability to transform the body. Brandt died in 1983 at the age of 79.1of 2
