BOOTH B9
For the 33rd edition of the Outsider Art Fair, Ricco/Maresca is proud to present a booth featuring a curated selection of masterpieces of Outsider, Self-Taught, and Art Brut, primarily from the esteemed collection of Robert M. Greenberg.
Built over a period of more than 40 years, this collection holds the best examples of work by Henry Darger (1892 - 1973), Martín Ramírez (1895 - 1963), William Edmondson (1874 - 1951), Bill Traylor (1853 - 1949), David Butler (1898 - 1997), Sam Doyle (1906 - 1985), William Hawkins (1895 - 1990), Aloïse Corbaz (1886 - 1964), Augustin Lesage (1876 - 1954), and Adolf Wölfli (1864 - 1930), among others.
“I collect art because the works offer me pleasure” wrote Greenberg in the introduction of the exhibition catalog Masterpieces from the Robert M. Greenberg Collection, published by Ricco/Maresca in 1999. “The pleasure lies in the examples of singular vision. The search for singular vision has driven me to gather the beautiful and often difficult works you see represented in this volume. By collecting, I am trying to protect myself. I surround myself with evidence of singular vision because I need to affirm that the individual is real and unique. What I find in outsider art is the opposite of what I find in the digital world: no compromise and complete expressive freedom.”

Turtle with Black Head was included in Bill Traylor's first exhibition in a former cotton sorting buiilding—headquarters of the New South Group. Photograph by Charles Shannon (Montgomery, Alabama, 1940)
"Early in 1939, a group of friends and I got together to try to start something that would alleviate the barrenness of our cultural landscape. We managed to generate some activities that lasted about a year. Whatever anyone wanted to try, we would. We got a meeting place and called it New South. It was a third-floor space in a downtown building consisting of several rooms originally used for cotton sampling.
Many skylights and windows down one side made for a beautiful light. The walls were predominantly a light blue but the scaling paint revealed many other colors. We held exhibitions of pottery and paintings by Southern artists ... It was here that we hung Bill Traylor's first show less than a year after he had begun to draw."
