The ADAA Fair: Herald Nix: Never the Same • In person and online

PARK AVENUE ARMORY

For nearly twenty years, Canadian painter Herald Nix (b. 1951) has been obsessively painting the same view of Shuswap Lake in British Columbia. One landscape, revisited countless times, yet never quite the same.

For the 2026 ADAA Fair, Ricco/Maresca presents forty paintings from this extraordinary undertaking. Executed in oil on small wooden panels, the works range from atmospheric whispers to forceful eruptions of color and gesture. Nix scrapes, carves, obscures, and reconstructs the familiar contours of water, hills, and sky, pushing representation to the edge of abstraction and back again.

What might seem like an exercise in repetition becomes an exhilarating demonstration of invention. Each painting is both a return and a departure, shaped by the unpredictable chemistry of perception, memory, and paint. In Nix's hands, obsession becomes a form of freedom: the more insistently he looks, the less the landscape yields to any definitive image.
