For the 34rd edition of the Outsider Art Fair, Ricco/Maresca is pleased to present an exhibition that delves into the visionary, obsessive, and profoundly original worlds of self-taught creators. The presentation brings together pivotal works by artists whose practices radiate invention and individuality, among them: James Castle (1899–1977), Franne Davids (1950 - 2022), Henry Darger (1892–1973), William Hawkins (1895–1990), Renaldo Kuhler (1931–2013), Martín Ramírez (1895–1963), Achilles Rizzoli (1896–1981), Drossos Skyllas (1912–1973), Bill Traylor (1853–1949), Willem van Genk (1927–2005), Grant Wallace (1868–1954), and Purvis Young (1943–2010).
Each of these artists constructs a distinct cosmos from unlikely materials: vaulted temples dense with text and ornament; balletic silhouettes drawn on scavenged cardboard; beasts rendered in riotous color; serial crowds marching across accordion‑like panels; and faces that emerge from fields of pattern and paint. Their works stand as acts of resistance against anonymity, affirmations of the irreducible self. Together they trace the fault lines between imagination and order, solitude and revelation—the territory where Outsider Art continues to astonish and expand what we understand as art itself.
